Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy in Turkey is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the United Kingdom Government’s international business development agency helping UK-based companies to export and attracting foreign direct investment into the UK economy.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide support for UK companies to develop and secure opportunities in the chemicals and agricultural sectors in Turkey. Additionally the role has responsibility for other multi sector UK trade opportunities in the Izmir and Aegean region of Turkey. This job will involve building and managing relationships with key Turkish and British companies and their in-country representatives, liaising with Turkish customs authorities and planning and delivering official visits and participation at relevant exhibitions and events. The role also requires working alongside and supporting the DIT Trade Manager at the British Consulate in Izmir, providing cover and support on campaigns and activities as needed.

This is a business facing commercial role that requires in depth experience of business development and promotion and would benefit greatly from specific experience in the Chemicals or Agriculture sectors. The Senior Trade Adviser is expected to work primarily in Izmir, managed by the Trade Manager in the British Consulate Izmir, but will work closely with the British Embassy in Ankara and may also travel to Istanbul and elsewhere as needed regularly. They will need to have the confidence and skills to engage with senior stakeholders on technical subjects, have an existing strong network and perform independently. The post-holder will also need to work alongside and support their line manager in particular, as well as closely with the wider DIT team in Turkey (Ankara, Istanbul) providing a degree of cover on occasion as required.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Leading DIT’s work on either the Chemicals sectors or the Agriculture sectors (to be agreed with candidate) by delivering a strategy aimed at growing the UK market share and increasing exports of UK goods and services in these sectors;
  • Identifying, developing and delivering key commercial campaigns in the chemicals and agriculture sectors. Managing these opportunities through their lifespan, ensuring maximum participation and benefit to UK industry;
  • Helping UK businesses in the Chemicals and Agriculture sectors to enter and develop, or grow their existing presence, in the Turkish market;
  • Monitoring opportunities; researching Turkish requirements and distributing information to relevant British Industry; produce up to date Industry Market Sector reports and identify and report on business opportunities for UK companies in Turkey. To proactively gather intelligence and nurture collaboration in the sectors;
  • Developing and maintaining contacts in the relevant UK and Turkish sectors;
  • Lobbying on behalf of UK companies to help secure business or position them more beneficially;
  • Identifying, planning and delivering visits (inward and outward), events, appointments and meetings; leading on event programmes, providing briefing materials and responding to requests for information and assistance;
  • Providing support and cover, as required, to the Trade Manager at the British Consulate Izmir;
  • Accompanying senior Embassy colleagues and UK companies on calls. Briefing senior Embassy and visiting officials as required.
  • Building the UK’s commercial profile in Izmir and the Aegean region through identifying business opportunities, building links with organisations in the region and supporting UK companies to enter the region.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • At least 5 years of work experience in supporting business development;
  • Candidates should also have a good local network established;
  • Degree-level education;
  • Knowledge of the UK business environment in these sectors and how that matches the opportunities available in Turkey;
  • Sound knowledge of the Turkish government procurement processes in these sectors;
  • Ability to meet with clients face to face, to travel within Turkey or internationally as needed, sometimes at short notice;
  • A proven record of delivering to challenging targets on a sustained basis;
  • The ability to effectively represent UK interests in meetings and via presentations to high level audiences;
  • Ability to work in a diverse, multicultural team where intense pressure and short deadlines are common;
  • Fluency in Turkish and English (both oral and written, both written and spoken, minimum of C2 CEFR framework* level for English language);
  • Ability to prioritise and work effectively and accurately under pressure and tight deadlines;
  • Commitment to organisational and personal learning and development;
  • Excellent IT skills, in particular Microsoft Teams, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills – A confident self-starter who projects a professional image and develops the skills, tools and competences needed to get the job done;
  • Pro-active and commercial minded and able to report on sector developments; able to identify new business opportunities and link them to the right UK stakeholder;
  • Excellent understanding of either the chemicals or agriculture sector, their end-users and related government organisations and how these interact;
  • Experience of working in an international environment either at an Embassy or multilateral organisation.
