The British Embassy in Ankara is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Economic Officer to join the Economic and Prosperity team. The successful applicant must be available to take up the position quickly. Flexibility, a positive outlook to change and adaptability are all qualities that will be needed by the jobholder.

As Economic Policy Officer, the jobholder will undertake reporting and analysis on Turkey’s economic policy based on understanding of the broader political context. They will be required to build and maintain a network of contacts in the Turkish economic policy community, attend relevant events and provide reports and analysis to colleagues in Turkey and London. The jobholder will need to be proactive in identifying economic developments of interest to colleagues in London and the wider Embassy team, in addition to responding to varying requests. They will also be required to take on other tasks and roles as required.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert, high quality analysis, advice, reporting to London stakeholders on Turkish economic, macro-financial developments, and Turkey’s position on key international economic policy issues;
  • Promote UK’s economic aims and support UK prosperity objectives through initiating and driving dialogue with external stakeholders such as key economic, financial, business and journalist contacts;
  • Monitor, analyse and report on Turkish reforms and economic policy developments;
  • Produce monthly economic reports and frequent ad hoc reports on topical elements of government economic policy (e.g. monetary policy, structural reforms, taxation and spending) and wider developments;
  • Respond by deadlines to UK government enquiries, providing accurate data and high quality responses;
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of events and webinars to promote UK economic and financial policy interests;
  • Contribute analysis and provide support for wider UK commercial aims in Turkey through working with UK Trade and Investment colleagues in both Ankara and Istanbul and Prosperity and Financial Sector colleagues in Istanbul;
  • Enhance the Embassy’s network, outreach and public profile on all issues, particularly with think tanks, political foundations and NGOs, including the organisation of events to promote UK aims;
  • Corporate – contribute to cross-cutting Embassy activities. Actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives in the Turkey Network.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Excellent command (both oral and written) of English and Turkish, Common European Framework level/equivalent C1 or above*;
  • Graduate-level qualification and detailed understanding of current economic trends and issues in Turkey (a qualification in economics or a related discipline and experience working as an economist focusing on Turkey would be highly desirable);
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, especially written to be able to produce rapid, succinct and insightful reports and analysis of Turkish economic developments and positions of key Turkish players;
  • Strong networking and relationship management skills. The successful candidate will need to develop and extend existing contacts, and maintain a wide network in Turkey. The jobholder will need to build relationships across a range of London stakeholders: our Prime Minister’s Office; HM
  • Treasury; Business Ministry; the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Bank of England. The jobholder will also need to work closely with colleagues in the Turkey network, especially the Trade Department and Political teams;
  • Flexible approach, strong initiative and adaptability to changing UK priorities. This will require juggling short-term priorities while making progress on longer-term goals;
  • Ability to work well on own initiative.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Previous experience working in a government Ministry or an Embassy in an economics related role, or similar experience in a private institution, think tank or academic environment.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a full-time permanent contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is 2,602.41 USD gross B3 level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

All applicants should have the right to live and work in Turkey. The British Embassy in Ankara does not sponsor for work permits.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.

Staff recruited locally by The British Embassy in Ankara is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Turkish employment law.
