Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Consulate General in Istanbul is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Trade Advisor (Digital Technology and Manufacturing) to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) team.

DIT is an international economic department securing UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment and championing free trade.

Context:

In this exciting position, you will support UK trade in the Turkish digital technology and advanced manufacturing sectors. Our aim is to deepen UK-Turkey cooperation in digital transformation, advanced engineering and manufacturing, help UK businesses to export their products, build new partnerships, and overcome market access barriers. You will work closely with colleagues across UK Government and the UK technology ecosystem. The other key aspect of the role will be to proactively gather and distribute intelligence on Turkey’s fast-moving digital transformation agenda which is quickly spreading throughout enterprise and the public sector. You will be expected to react to emerging trends and in Turkey, and assess where trading/partnership opportunities are springing up for UK businesses.

You should be passionate about business development, have a clear understanding of Turkey’s technology sector, and be up-to-date with commercial developments that will allow you and the team to be in the best position to support UK business. The work will be varied and demanding and you will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter and able to juggle priorities to demanding timelines.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Bring your own network of contacts within the Turkey market. This may include industry organisations and technology systems integrators (corporate and/or public sector buyers);
  • Self-starting, professionalism, confidence, proactive and persistence to call on companies and other stakeholders to generate leads, building the pipeline and securing project wins;
  • Identify UK exporters with an offer relevant to the Turkish technology and advanced manufacturing sectors; and utilise your client relationship skills to help them feel supported in their export journey;
  • Lobbying on behalf of UK companies to help secure business, to position them more beneficially, and help increase UK market share;
  • Ability to meet with clients face to face, to travel within Turkey or internationally as needed, sometimes at short notice;
  • Contribute to UK Government’s export ambitions for Turkey by delivering £2M worth of Export Wins in 2021/22, and record/ report on your interactions on DataHub;
  • Support the organisation and delivery of events, including Ministerial visits and trade missions including the UK Emerging Tech trade mission 2022 and involvement in UK and Turkey industry tradeshows (i.e. London Tech Week). Speak about your work at public events as required;
  • Build links with other teams and promote inclusion and wellbeing in our working environment;
  • Be proactive about your own development – and understand how the UK’s trade agenda interfaces with other parts of government including the UK Science and Innovation Network, and British Council.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Excellent command (both oral and written) of English and Turkish, Common European Framework level/equivalent C1 or above*;
  • Undergraduate degree, or equivalent practical experience (3-5 years) in a multinational organisation, preferably in business development and/or trade related job;
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, comfortable dealing with senior officials and business people (both with the Clients and service providers);
  • Understand emerging (Ai,IoT,5G, blockchain, AR/VR) technologies and how they are being applied to different sectors;
  • Self-starting, professionalism, confidence, proactive and persistence to call on companies and other stakeholders to generate leads, building the pipeline and securing project wins;
  • Proven ability to build strong and effective networks and relationships with a range of stakeholders, including senior stakeholders and partners;
  • Ability to prioritise, efficient time management, good planning skills;
  • Advanced computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience in working in a similar role;
  • Experience in working in an international environment and virtual teams;
  • Awareness of the strengths of the UK technology ecosystem;
  • Experience in digital transformation for enterprise and public sector organisations.

Other Benefits and Conditions of Employment

This is a full-time permanent contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net).

The monthly salary for this position is 2,602.41USD gross B3(L) level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

All applicants should have the right to live and work in Turkey. The British Consulate does not sponsor for work permits.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.

Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General in Istanbul are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Turkish employment law.
